Argument Proposal

For my argument paper I would like to write about the link between crime and education level. I think it is a controversial issue because people could argue that some white collar crimes are committed by very educated individuals. I would like to look at the difference between violent and non violent crimes and compare them to the criminals education and where they live. I do have some knowledge of the issue, however, it may more be of an opinion than actual knowledge. I plan to research the subject by searching for credible articles and searching crime databases if possible. I will link this argument paper to a photo essay easily, as there are many photos of crimes floating around.

  1. My initial response is that this seems like a huge topic. Also it seems that it may be more analytical than argumentative (looking into the correlations between violent/nonviolent crime and educational level). People may have different ideas about what the facts would be, but I'm not sure it's really a debatable topic, more a matter of just finding out what the stats say?

That said, I think there are arguable issues to be found within this general area. One possibility that comes to mind involves appropriate sentencing for nonviolent crime (or perhaps one type of nonviolent crime in particular?) Or are you interested in possible prejudice against less educated defendants? (It still seems like a large issue!) Or maybe something about "country-club prisons"? Have you been able to find any sources that might lead you n one direction or another?

  2. I've been using the links you provided to find sources but im not having the best luck. I would be interested in researching the sentencing topic, however i would have to think about which nonviolent crime i would like to argue for, or against. I will try to find some credible sources to lead me in the right direction. Thank you for the feedback

  3. I was looking on the newsweek website and found some articles about strict sentencing on women when convicted of drug offenses. I will argue that the strict minimum sentences are unfair. Some sources i have found so far include:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/26/us/us-correctional-population-hits-new-high.html#

    http://www.nytimes.com/1996/12/29/nyregion/now-chapter-thrives-among-inmates.html#

    http://www.nytimes.com/1996/08/20/us/criminal-and-welfare-rules-raise-new-issues-of-fairness.html?pagewanted=3

    http://www.nytimes.com/1995/04/16/us/reno-backs-strict-sentences-for-sellers-of-crack-cocaine.html

is it important for every source we use to be approved?

    1. No, you don't need to get sources approved. Just try to make sure they are credible. All of these NYTimes ones seem fine!
